3.3 Noticing numeracy in my setting

Referring back to your weekly learning outcomes, by the end of this topic, you will be able to:

  • identify examples, and language of the numeracy focus areas in your own setting.

Activity 1: Examples of numeracy focus areas in your setting

View the Numeracy focus areas for the stage of development you are interested. Select two numeracy focus areas (e.g., Level 3 to Level 8 - Exploring Patterns and Relationships, and Exploring Chance and Data ). Review the examples and language used to develop numeracy in that area. Devise two robust examples (including suitable vocabulary), of ways to develop this numeracy focus.

Activity 2: Language of numeracy

Over the period of a couple of hours or a day, record each time you notice yourself using numeracy language, including recommended language in the Birth to Level 10 Numeracy Guide. Consider the following questions:

  • Is your numeracy language centred on particular numeracy focus areas?
  • Are there any numeracy focus areas that might benefit from more of your attention?
