5.2 Using Numeracy at Home with families

Referring back to your weekly learning outcomes, by the end of this topic, you will be able to:

  • recommend strategies to family members to foster numeracy learning at home.

Activity: How can I help build my child's numeracy?

Watch Everyday play from the Birth to Level 10 Numeracy Guide and listen to Julieann, a parent of three young children aged 2, 4 and 6, as she shares opportunities in everyday activities to build her children’s numeracy. Note the key messages you take from this video.

Once you have watched Julieann's video, visit How can I build my child's numeracy? from the Numeracy Guide. Watch and observe Jackson and Bonnie explore patterns, number concepts, and measurement, through bead play. Think of an everyday activity children or young people do at home. What numeracy skills have the potential to be fostered during this activity?

Encouraging families to foster numeracy at home

Helping children to become numerate does not require a high level of mathematics. Design an outline for an information night for families at your future or current educational setting. What are the key messages you want families to take away from the evening?

Refer back to How can I build my child's numeracy? to support your advice. Additionally, family members are often concerned about how they can help with homework. Read and refer to Helping with homework to include a section on this universal concern in your information night outline.
