Purpose
Purpose
Research recommends that children’s numeracy is strengthened when families are actively involved in their child’s learning. However, many family members do not feel confident with mathematics and are unsure what they can do to help. This activity will help you think about how you can assist families in fostering children and young people's numeracy.
Task
Task
- Consider the following scenario:
- Aazar, a Year 2 teacher was running a parent information session about their school’s mathematics program. At one point, a parent made the following comment “I was hopeless at maths and always hated it. I don’t have a maths brain. So I get it if Gina doesn’t like maths either.” Many parents nodded their head in agreeance.
- How would you respond to your room full of parents? What advice would you give to families who do not feel confident in supporting their children’s numeracy? Record your ideas.
- Refer to Busting some common mathematics myths to support your advice.
Complete the activity in your reflective journal.
